Sponsored Post: Find My Hosting

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Find My HostingFindMyHosting.com is a hosting directory where you can find the right hosting plan without hassle and it's really true. Directly at the main page the top ten most popular offers are listed with the most vital data needed to select a hosting company: disk space, uptime, monthly price and score. You also get to see their money back guarantee and prices on domains.

A little bit further down on the site they have a search form where you can in more detail specify your needs like in which country you prefer to have your servers and your preferred hosting platform (i.e. Linux or Windows).

You can also browse their hosting directory with all companies listed by category like PHP Hosts or ASP Hosts. When you browse the directory you can see all plans by the same web host, which is good if you find a hosting company you like by reading the reviews they have at FindMyHosting.com with the hosting companies.

If you're new to hosting (most of us have been at least) you can find some informative articles on what to focus on when getting a budget web host, or how to switch hosting company.

So if you're looking for a new place to host your web projects check out FindMyHosting.com

AboutUs.org widget – finally

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

A couple of days ago I got an email from Kristina from AboutUs.org telling me about their new widget (also see their blog).

They've had a badge before (simply an image) you could add to your web site to link to your own page at AboutUs.org, but now you can get something even more useful. The widget is similar to the CrunchBase.com widget which is good because then you can use both the AboutUs.org widget and the CrunchBase.com widget when your writing about a company/web site/web service. The AboutUs.org provides information like domain name, site title and topics from a web site.

So for example if this article would be about the web site AboutUs.org, then I could add the widget for AboutUs.org at the bottom of this post to provide the readers some additional information on the web site. The users also get the possibility to edit the information in the AboutUs page thanks to an edit button inside the widget.

The widget is a fantastic new service from the AboutUs team, but there are a couple of down-sides:

  • They don't have an API for their widget. It would be great if they added this to search their wiki for a specific web site, and if you get a match you could create the widget. This would make it possible to create a Wordpress plugin to automatically include widgets in your blog posts when-ever you write about a site.
  • There should be options to include more, or other information then just the standard information. For example a short description and the site thumbnail. To avoid too much information in the widget they could use a "show more info" link to expand the widget if the reader want more information.
  • If you're logged in at AboutUs and press the edit button you should be taken directly to the edit page instead of the page about the site.

I know this is a new service so I hope they develop it further.

Tasks in Gmail

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Some time ago I wrote about a task manager called TaskFreak!. We at Xavier Media are using it and are quite happy since it's web based (installed on our own servers), allows multiple users to work on the same projects, got time recording and many other features. However that may be more features than most of you need (you also need some technical experience and a server to install and use it).

So if you need a task manager to keep track on everything you have to do, but you don't want to install some software on your server and keep it up to date I suggest you have a look at the task manager in Gmail.

Since most of you already got a Gmail account you also have access to the task manager offered by Google. It's still something you have to search for in Google Labs which means that it's kind of experimental, but I've been trying it for sometime now and haven't found any big problems with it.

Gmail TasksTo activate the task manager you just login at your Gmail account click on "Settings", select the "Labs" tab and scroll down to"Tasks". When you've enabled tasks you get a new link in the left menu (under contacts) that says "Tasks". If you click on that link the task window will open in the same browser window as you view Gmail in :D .

You can create several lists of tasks (one for work, one private and maybe even one for your hobbies) and it's really easy to add a new task (just click somewhere in the white area in the task window and start writing). By pressing the little arrow next to each task you can add a description and a due date (both visible in the task list) and you can drag and drop your task in any order you like.

When you've completed a task you just check the checkbox and select "Clear completed tasks" in the Action menu.

If you get an email you have to act on you just press shift + T (or select "Add to task" from the "More actions" menu)when you're reading the email and a new task will be created from the email :D .

I love this task manager since it's simple and you have it connected to your email account. I'm just waiting for an update where you can share tasks (or even lists) between several users :D .

Tasks in Gmail works even if you use Google Gears (Gmail offline).
