The AboutUs.org domain lookup tool

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

On the 15th of May I wrote a post with some suggestions on how to improve the domain name wiki AboutUs.org and yesterday I noticed a ping-back from the AboutUs blog with a link to my post with suggestions. Guess what: They've actually followed one of my suggestions and created a plugin for your browser so you can look up domain names and web sites at AboutUs.org with just one click in your web browser :D .

To start looking up the sites you're visiting in the AboutUs wiki you simply just drag this link to your bookmark bar (if you're using Firefox that is):

—->> AboutUs <<—-

If you got IE you need to right click on the AboutUs link and select "Add to favorites".

Whenever you visit a site you would like to know more about, write some comments about or just want to have a look at what other people think you simply just click on the bookmark and you'll instantly be taken to the AboutUs page for the domain you're visiting :D

This is a good and handy tool, but it's not completely working without problems. If you for example visit www.xaviermedia.com and click on the bookmark you will be redirected to www.aboutus.org/xaviermedia.com (the page about xaviermedia.com). If you for example instead visit this blog (blog.xaviermedia.com) and click on the bookmark you get an error message instead of the page about xaviermedia.com :(

Error message when using AboutUs Bookmarklet on subdomains

This little tool is a good start, but they need to make it work with subdomains too because more and more sites are using subdomains for different content pages instead of directories.

4 out of 5 XStill with the little "subdomain bug" I'm going to award this tool 4 out of 5 possible X's for this innovative tool, fast work implementing it and for a good wiki :D Get it you too and don't forget to spread the word so we can build a much better community at AboutUs.org together.

BTW, don't forget to check out the page about XavierMedia.com when you have a few minutes to spare.

How to create your own AboutUs.org page

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

AboutUs.orgAboutUs.org is a wiki built with the same software as Wikipedia, but instead of being an Encyclopedia of everything it's focusing on domain names. If you would like to know more about a company behind a domain name AboutUs.org is the place where you should have a look since almost every domain name registered got its own page in the form of Aboutus.org/sampleaddress.com (where sampleaddress.com is the domain you would like to look up). If a page doesn't exist for the domain name you're looking for the AboutUs.org bot will create one in a few seconds :)

Since AboutUs.org is built using MediaWiki (same as most Wiki's in the world) all users can help build the database, but you need to know the correct syntax to use since HTML wont work. AboutUs.org already got a good guide helping you to get started, but I will anyway mention a few of the basic codes.

Bold text:

"'Bold text:"'

Italic text:

"Italic text:"

Force a line break with <br>:

first line <br> second line

Make text small:

<small>text</small>

Enlarge text:

<big>Enlarged text</big>

Make text striked over:

<strike>text</strike>

Link to an external page outside AboutUs.org:

[http://sampleaddress.com Sample Address]

Link to an internal page at AboutUs.org:

[[SampleAddress.com Sample Address]]

You can also create tables and add images too, but that's another lesson :D

Now it's time for you to visit your own domain names AboutUs.org page by typing Aboutus.org/sampleaddress.com (where sampleaddress.com is your own domain name) in your web browser. If you don't have a domain name yet you can get one for just a few bucks at eXavier.com.

AboutUs.org - Advertising worth the money?

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

I don't know if you have heard about AboutUs.org before but it's a wiki similar to Wikipedia.org, but it's only for web sites. You can look up any domain name you like in AboutUs.org by typing aboutus.org/sampleaddress.com in your web browser.

There are three ways to get your domain name listed in AboutUs.org:

  1. Wait until the AboutUs.org bot has spidered your site
  2. Write your own page
  3. Pay AboutUs.org $197 to do the page for you

To find out if it's a good deal to pay for a page at AboutUs.org I pulled out my credit card and paid. To be honest I didn't only pay just to be able to do this review, I really really wanted a better AboutUs.org page too :D . A good Aboutus.org page must be as good as a good MillionDollarWiki.com page or maybe even better :???:

At their site they offer you the following for a flat fee of $197:

  • Position yourself in front of more than 5,000,000 unique readers each month.
  • Increase your results in the search engines.
  • Point more traffic to your website.
  • Create an amazing article that will tell the world about your business.
  • Build strong relationships with the community.
  • Develop ongoing dialog about you and your business.
  • Generate another way for clients to find you.

I'm happy with the coach I got to help me build the page, but what I don't like is that most of the stuff at my AboutUs.org page is copied directly from my site. Hey it's a page about my site so it actually doesn't matter…. Or?

The traffic they mention is not something I've noticed at all :( , but I guess it will take until the next pagerank update by Google to see some results on the search engine ranking. I think they should offer some kind of statistics for the people that upgrade their page because otherwise it's going to be really hard to figure out if it was a good investment or not. Especially since it's your wiki page that's featured on their front page, not your actual homepage.

So, was it worth $197?

My opinion is that it's not worth the money, but on the other hand people spend $100 for a page at MillionDollarWiki and then you don't get any help building the page at all. At Aboutus.org I got a coach helping me at least.

If you can build your page yourself (i.e. you know the syntax) and have the time to do it then do that instead of paying $197. If you don't know how to do your own page and really really really really want a better AboutUs.org page, then buy this service.

If you're interested in having a look at my AboutUs.org page you'll find it at aboutus.org/xaviermedia.com.
