Translate in Gmail

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Are you too using Gmail, then this is really good news for you. If you use the English language version of Gmail, then you can select to activate translate for your emails. This service is still something in Google abs (Google's test environment), but since it's based on Google's translate tool it should be pretty useful anyway for most of us. And I don't think there will be any direct bugs in the functionality.

To turn on the translation service you login to your Gmail account and click on "Settings", then select the tab called "Labs" (I think it's only available for the English version of Gmail, but I'm a little bit unsure).

Then scroll down to the plugin called "Message translation" and set it to enabled.

If you now get an email in any other language then English you will get something like this in your email:

Translation options

In this case I'm trying to translate a Swedish email into English and I have to say that I'm really satisfied with the results. I'm already waiting for my first email in Spanish to test it on some more languages :D

New Google logos

Monday, May 25th, 2009

In the Google blog you can see the new logos will/have implemented for their different services.

The idea with this update is to get similar logos for all services and the first services to get updated logos are maps, news and docs. Over the next few weeks more services will get updated logos too.

Google Logos

To the left you see the english names and to the right some local examples.

Google writes:

Since the logos appear in many different locations and sizes on our websites, our new designs are standardized to be the same size and color wherever they appear.

I like the idea that they will have the same style on all logos. What do you think?

Swine Flue outbreak on the Internet

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

swine_flue_twitterWe've all seen the headlines in major newspapers, news web sites and on TV about the Swine Flue outbreaks. The Swine Flue is on the top 10 list twice over trending topics from Twitter (see the picture) and at Google you already get over 75,000 hits!

Spammers have of course noticed this and their already taking advantage of the fear for Swine Flue. McAfee is reporting about spam emails trying to use Swine Flue to sell pills. If you follow the links in any of the emails mentioned you end up at web sites trying to infect your computer with maleware, so you really shouldn't trust any such emails.

The spam emails Trend Micro is reporting about only contains information about the Swine Flue in the subject line, in the rest of the spam email the reader gets information about penis enlagrement pills. I'm not exactly sure about the connection between flue and the size of your penis, but I'm pretty sure they have nothing to do with each other

Google Flue Trends - Flue trends in Mexico

Even Google is taking advantage of the interest for Swine Flue, but unlike spammers Google actually provides something usefull about the Swine Flue. Google is using the Google Trends to create a service called Google Flue Trends. By combining data from searches and outbreaks they try to analyze the trends of flue. They also got a special web site just for the Swine Flue outbreaks where you can see how intense the flue trend is right now.
