How many weird names do Yahoo got?

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

I was going true some domain names when I started finding weird Yahoo! domain names that they had registered, so I decided to do some investigations :D . Since more people then just Yahoo are using their name servers nsX.yahoo.com (they’re also used for their hosting clients) that was a dead end, so I created a list of all domain names pointing to the same IP address as yahoo.com.

That’s a big list with more then 8,500 domain names pointing to yahoo.com :D . Most of them are .com domains, but they also got .biz, .info, .org and .net domain names.

If you say that they pay about $7 per domain name then the total cost for all names on the list would be $59,584 and I’m sure they have even more domain names registered that I didn’t find during this investigation.

Some of the domain names show us that they have prepared several partnerships with other companies: GOOGLEANDYAHOO.COM and MICROSOFT-YAHOO.COM.

Misspellings

When you got a popular site you have to protect your visitors from misspellings. Could also be names registered by phising sites trying to steal your Yahoo login.

Rising Price Of Oil Pushes Consumers Online

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

As the price of oil keeps rising there are signs that more people than ever before are looking to use the internet for their everyday shopping. The migration from the high street to the online superhighway seems to be gathering pace, but what can you do to benefit? What is the real reason for this ongoing change in shopping habits?

One of the main reasons for the change seems to be the fact that you can order literally anything that you want online, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The selection of goods is far greater than the array you would find in your local area and there are many niche players out there who can offer you large discounts on even the most common of everyday goods. Postage costs, which were once a problem for many shoppers, have now been overtaken by the price of oil and the cost of even getting to your desired location before you start buying offline.

There are also signs that many consumers are leaving their cars behind and using the internet superhighway to order even the most basic of everyday goods. There are more stores organising home deliveries than ever before, there are more offers of free postage and prices online do not seem to be following the general trend higher. While the rise in general business costs will be hitting margins across the board, the relatively low cost base for online businesses means that while margins may shrink a little, the increase in turnover should more than make up for this.

While the price of oil is literally bleeding many consumer dry, it seems to have been something of a god send for the online arena, the chance to show that costs can still be cut to the bone, and delivery charges are more reasonably priced than ever before. Offering quality goods and affordable prices 24 hours a day is the way forward. Now what are you waiting for?

Will The Online Business Market Expand Or Shrink During The Recession?

Friday, June 13th, 2008

While normally you would expect any business market to show some signs of shrinkage during a recession, there is a theory that this may not be the case with the online business market. If you take a step back and think how you might shop if you are looking to save money, or you can’t afford the fuel for a long distance shopping trip, that theory may have some credibility. So how would it work?

The idea is that as money becomes tighter and people struggle to buy their everyday goods, more and more people will look to buy whatever they can online. As we have covered in earlier articles, the internet has cut out a number of cost layers for many online businesses which allows them to be so competitive on price. While this does not work for every site and every business sector, there are many more online sites undercutting traditional stores than the other way around.

However, there is a potential flaw to this argument with the fact that while savings can be made online, the chances are that the fall in disposable incomes will be more than the potential online savings. So we could actually end up with a scenario whereby both online and offline markets reduce in size, BUT the overall percentage of online transactions increases at the expense of the offline markets.

So the chances are that by the time we leave the current period of economic uncertainty behind, the share of online transactions, compared to offline transactions, will have increased markedly – albeit as a percentage of a smaller retail market. While there is a chance that some consumers may return to some of their offline shopping habits when money is a little more available, the probability is that once they realise the potential savings of shopping online they could be converted forever.
