Peel-off corner ads

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

I guess you have seen the small, slightly animated corners in the right upper corner of some pages (mostly blogs) where an ad will show up if you move your mouse over the corner. If you haven’t then check out the right upper corner of this blog!

This is something called peel-off corner ads or peel away ads and is according to me an innovative way of showing ads (I just love to check out these ads, but that may be because I’m a geek :) ). I’ve seen sites selling the little piece of code doing exactly this for anywhere between $5 up to $137 (!!!!) when there are free alternatives that’s doing the exact same thing. John Chow for example tried to sell the script for $37 (!!!). OK he’s selling a little bit more advanced piece of code, but I guess you can find free scripts that do the same thing if you combine them.

How to add peel-off ads on your site

As I said yesterday on Twitter.com I’m going to tell you how to install this kind of ads on your own site or blog.

It’s quite easy to install and use (the hardest part is to create the actual ads :) ). The script I’m using is from donalyza.com, but you can find similar scripts on other pages too. Just search for free peel off ads script at Google. The beauty with this kind of ads is that you can add it on any page you like not just only your blog.

  1. Download the files needed. Usually it’s a .js file (the actual script), two Flash movies (one for the animated corner and one for the big ad) and two images (one for the small corner and one for the ad).
  2. Open the .js file in any text editor you like (I use for example Wordpad on Windows or Nano on Linux) and make a few adjustments (just follow the instructions :) ).
  3. Create two images. One small (the corner: 75×75 pixels) and one big (the actual ad: 500×500)
  4. Upload all your files to your web server
  5. Add one line of code at your web site:

    <script src=”/pagepeel/PagePeel.js” type=”text/javascript”></script>

  6. If you can’t see the corner ad you need to make sure that you uploaded all images in the correct folder (that was my first mistake :( )

Now it’s time to let the creativity flow :D If you’re using peel-off ads on your site or blog, please post a link here so we can have a look at how you did it.

If there’s something you would like to know how to do, please send me a message and maybe, just maybe I’ll write a post on how to do it :)

.EDU links part 2

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Some time ago I wrote about getting a dot EDU link to your site (see this post) and now it’s time for a follow up (well actually just a short tips).

If you want a link to your site from a page hosted on a dot EDU domain name, then you can get your own blog at The University of Alabama. It’s free for now, but I don’t know if it’s going to stay that way or not :???:

I got a blog for Xavier Media just to test the service and I’m happy with the Wordpress Mu installation they are using. Unfortunately they get a lot of spamblogs signing up and you can’t install any of your own plugins :(

How to get an .edu link to your site?

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

I have seen this question asked in a lot of forums on the Internet lately and I will soon tell you where to get .edu links, but first I need to answer another question I have seen lately.

Are .edu links any different from links from .com pages?
According to Matt Cutts blog a link from a .com page is no different from a link from a .edu page. Matt says “Google doesn’t treat .edu and .gov links differently, those pages just usually have a lot of PageRank.” (see the video at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1756437348670651505). So by just having a link to your site from a .edu domain will not by itself give you a lot of PageRank, you need to get links from pages with high PageRank to get higher PageRank for your site.

Since Google doesn’t threat .edu domain any different then other domains why should other search engines like Yahoo, MSN and Live.com do that?

Still want links from .edu domains?
Since you will not get any better ranking in search engines after a few .edu links then from a couple of .com links, why do you want .edu links for? My answer is simply: If it’s hard to get, then I want it!

Where do I get an .edu link to my site?
There are a few places where you can get .edu links to your site(s). For example at Adison University (www.adison.edu) and CTMF (www.ctmf.edu) you can get your own .edu blog for a small monthly donation. You can also be active in the Adison University forum because then you can get one link to your site for free.

You can also buy expired domain names with links from sites like harvard.edu or you can (this is the hard option) create your own educational institution and register a .edu domain name at www.educause.edu/edudomain/show_faq.asp?codeíUELIGIBILITY.

You can of course also become a student at any university with a .edu domain and setup your own student page (most universities offer some free space to their students to setup a personal home page).

You can also get a link from xavier.edu.eu.org if you like (it’s not a real .edu domain, but the domain contains .edu :D ).
