How many weird names do Yahoo got?

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

I was going true some domain names when I started finding weird Yahoo! domain names that they had registered, so I decided to do some investigations :D . Since more people then just Yahoo are using their name servers nsX.yahoo.com (they’re also used for their hosting clients) that was a dead end, so I created a list of all domain names pointing to the same IP address as yahoo.com.

That’s a big list with more then 8,500 domain names pointing to yahoo.com :D . Most of them are .com domains, but they also got .biz, .info, .org and .net domain names.

If you say that they pay about $7 per domain name then the total cost for all names on the list would be $59,584 and I’m sure they have even more domain names registered that I didn’t find during this investigation.

Some of the domain names show us that they have prepared several partnerships with other companies: GOOGLEANDYAHOO.COM and MICROSOFT-YAHOO.COM.

Misspellings

When you got a popular site you have to protect your visitors from misspellings. Could also be names registered by phising sites trying to steal your Yahoo login.

Why use .TV domain name?

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

.TV domain name is originally an internet country code top-level domain for the island nation of Tuvalu, a Polynesian island located somewhere between Hawaii and Australia in the Pacific Ocean. This domain is run by dotTV, a VeriSign company with the Tuvalu government owning 20% of the company. Although the name .TV is an abbreviation of the country of Tuvalu, it has been misconceived by the public audiences that the name stands for television. And that is the reason why web hostesses are taking an advantage of the name to promote their products and services.

When audiences think of TV, the things that will come to mind are entertainment, excitement, rich images and sound, etc. Well now, we have seen all of that moving to the internet. More and more people are demanding for the internet to deliver the same level of entertainment experiences, sights and sounds that they traditionally experience on regular television in their living room.

And it does not just stop there.

Businesses are starting to recognize that static contents prove to be just insufficient. At this time of a decade, more audiences desire richer and more dynamic experience. .TV domain name is most suitable for businesses like major broadcast companies, music publisher, social networking services, sports leagues, training providers, and other savvy businesses. And all of them are benefiting from the name .TV to deliver new and exciting content and also, to create new revenue flow for their businesses.

What distinguishes web addresses that have a .TV domain name from addresses with other domain names, is that the name .TV already gives audiences the impression that a compelling content, vibrant rich-media experience awaits, before they even go to visit their websites. And since .TV domain name is more descriptive, memorable, and distinct, it makes it easier for visitors to recall their address with no problem, should they look to come back to the website.

What’s wrong with ReviewMe.com?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Earlier today when I tried to access Reviewme.com I couldn’t access the site because it seemed offline. I also noticed that it was problems with iWebTool.com too at the same time so it must have been something wrong with the Internet connection between me and them, but when the access to ReviewMe got back I got this front page instead of the usual front page:

What’s wrong? Have they been hacked or what?

I checked the whois records, but since they use a proxy (Whois Privacy Protection Service, Inc) I can’t verify if the domain name has been hijacked or not. This is one of the down-sides with proxy when you register domain names, your customers can’t verify if they access your page or not :( .

Anyway I hope the access gets restored soon…..
