So You Are Thinking Of Calling It A Day? Why?

Friday, May 16th, 2008

While we see the headlines about thousands of new internet sites being launched each and every day of the year, it seems that more and more would be online entrepreneurs are calling it a day. The news that some are struggling will not surprise those who follow the industry but why are people calling it a day? What is the problem?

The problem with many new entrants to the online world is the fact that they see the headlines, they see the multi-millionaires driving about in their new Ferrari’s and they want it – tomorrow!

There is no other business environment which can match the internet for building up your hopes only to scupper them and leave you feeling helpless – but is it really that bad. The sad fact is that many people who join the online revolution come to the party with some great ideas, fresh thoughts and a will to win. However, too many get disappointed and leave the scene before they have given their site and business a chance to breath. It does not happen over night for 99.999999% of people, so give it time and give your new business time to breath. Make sure you don’t give you site and your early start business away for buttons!

More and more people are set to feel real pain and guilt in the future with more and more savvy online business people picking up good sites, good domains and great business ideas for “buttons”. A little bit more “link juice”, a revamp of the site design and the business you sold for a few dollars may well be the success story of tomorrow. Don’t regret it, don’t give it away and don’t lose the faith!

The chance to make a living online is there for all of us, we all just need to take a little more time and work, work, work…..the chance is yours, don’t miss it!

.ME Sunrise Starts

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

The sunrise period for the .ME top level domain has started and will end on the 20th of May 2008. A sunrise period is when trademark holders can register their trademarks as domain names in a new top level domain like country code domain .ME.

After the sunrise period closes, domain names requested by multiple trademark-holders will be auctioned between the requesting parties.

Dot ME is the new top level domain for Montenegro which used to be a part of Serbia and Montenegro with .YU as top level domain. The .ME registry is operated by University of Montenegro on behalf of the government.

After the 17th of July the registrations will be open to anyone and not only trademark holders.

If you would like to pre-register your own .ME domain you may do so at eXavier.com for 5 or 10 years at the time.

How to use Blogger on your own domain name

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

Many of you fellow bloggers are using Blogger.com as your blogging platform since it’s easy to setup and use. That’s fine, but have you made any plans for the future? How many big, successfull and profitable professional blogs have you seen lately using Blogger as platform?

Blogger is using subdomains as standard (i.e. sampleaddress.blogspot.com) which is harder to remember for your visitors then www.sampleaddress.com or blog.sampleaddress.com. Another downside is that a Blogger subdomain can’t be moved if you would like to change blog software, install plugins, etc.

The solution is to use your own domain name already from the beginning and Blogger got two solutions for you. That way you don’t have to redirect or ask your visitors to bookmark another URL if you move your blog and you can use your own brand the whole way :D

DNS

This way you redirect your domain name or a subdomain of your own domain name (i.e. blog.sampleaddress.com) to Blogger. If you don’t have a domain name already you can buy it from Google. Inside Blogger you simply just click on “Settings” and “Publishing”:

Blogger: Get your own domain name

If you already got a domain name you would like to use, you switch over to the advanced option and fill in your already registered domain name. The advanced option require you to change DNS settings for your domain name and that require some work in your registrars domain control panel. Luckily most registrars got easy to follow instructions for that :D and Google will tell you exactly what you need to change.

FTP publishing

This means that Blogger will send all files to your server (i.e. www.sampleaddress.com/blog/) instead of you redirecting your domain name to Blogger. This option is perfect for you if you can’t change DNS settings for your domain name or if you absolutely need to have your blog in a directory instead of using a subdomain for example.

To use this option you must accept anyone as a reader and you have to use a classic template. To set this up you simply visit the same page as in the example above (”Settings” and “Publishing”). Select the FTP option and fill in all your FTP details. If you don’t have your FTP details you can get them from your web hosting provider.

As soon as you’ve saved your settings Blogger will start sending all your files to your hosting account. Every time you post a new post blogger will send the new and the updated file to your server, so it’s important that you update your settings at Blogger if you for example change the FTP password.
