How to Buy a Domain Name

July 6th, 2008 by User ImageSharon (Who am I?)

Buying a domain name should be an easy task if not for the financial prospect for those who wish to buy existing domain names that are very popular and have very high re-sale value, because such popular domain name like sex.com for example, was once sold for a whopping $12 million US dollars due to the name itself.

To buy a domain name, all you need is a computer, internet connection, credit card, and maybe thesaurus. One method is to go through an Internet domain registrar, or you can simply bid for them in e-bay or sorts, but the amount of available names for sale are rather limited in that kind of e-commerce websites. Domain names that are being auctioned in e-bay are usually search engine optimized and still registered or parked, thus saving buyers from having to register again, and they only have to renew by a certain period of time before they expire.

If you choose to start a new domain, there are many Internet domain registrars on which you can buy a domain name from. Some of the most widely used are godaddy.com and netfirms.com. GoDaddy.com gives you domain name for only $1.99, and it comes with personalized e-mail, a web site builder, blog, and more.

The second thing you want to do is check for the availability of the domain name you would like to register by typing it in the search box. The following page will tell you if the domain name you searched for is available or already taken. If not, keep in mind that there are many other types of domain names that can be used, if you insist to use the same domain name, like .net, .org, .tv, etc. It is advised that you purchase multiple similar domain names for the sake of promoting your business.

Once you make your selection, godaddy.com will give you additional features that you may choose to be placed in your domain, like hosting for your website, and even hosting for your own podcast. Review your order, click purchase and the domain if yours.

If you are looking to buy a domain name for an existing website however, you will have to consult the owner of that particular domain and see if the owner is selling the domain. In that case, you are more likely to participate in a bidding game to buy the domain from its current owner.
